Cat Urine: Your Newest Living Room Accessory

Cat Urine: Your Newest Living Room Accessory

Cat Urine: Your Newest Living Room Accessory

Cat urine. What a lovely addition to your carpeting! There are two basic reasons why your brand new carpet has been graced with parfum de cat urine: 1) Your cat is trying to tell you he has a medical issue that's causing him pain; or 2) your cat is marking. The first is physiological and the second is
behavioral. Cat urine can be deposited on vertical or horizontal surfaces. Possible Medical Problems Behind Cat Urine Oftentimes your will squat or spray cat urine practically right in front of you because he's trying to tell you that something's wrong. Medical reasons why cats deposit cat urine on walls or floors include: Urinary tract infection. This is the most common ailment.
Clogged anal glands Dogs aren't the only ones with anal glands! (Just be glad that humans don't have them, and that we don't have to get to know one another by sniffing each other's rear end!) Your cat's anal glands may become plugged over time, and he may need them expressed at the vet's. You don't want to be in the same room when it happens. Both ailments require a trip to the vet (your cat's very favorite pastime) and quite possibly antibiotics. Cat Urine Marking Behaviors Leaving cat urine on the carpet or walls is not Tuffy's way of misbehaving, being spiteful, or exhibiting jealousy. Here are the real reasons: Not being spayed or neutered If you have several cats and some of them aren't fixed, those who are fixed may spray cat urine in response to those who aren't. Also, Prissy Miss is just as likely to spray cat urine as Mr. Boy is. Conflicts with other cats in the home A cat may spray cat urine to establish dominance. The flip side of this cat urine coin is that the cat who is bullied may spray cat urine as a way to alleviate his anxiety. He may even be simply relieving his bladder if the dominant cat is aggressively defending the litter box as his own territory! Encounters with outdoor animals If your cat has encountered another cat while venturing outdoors, he may instinctively mark his indoor territory with cat urine when comes back in. Even if your cat never ventures outdoors, just seeing another cat near your home can trigger him to mark you hallways with cat urine. New objects in the environment When Tuffy graces your new boyfriend's shoes with his cat urine, he's not trying to tell you that this fellow doesn't pass cat-standards, he's simply marking some more territory. This is especially true if your new guy's shoes smell like another animal. It's important to note that punishing cat urine marking behavior is ineffective, even if you do it immediately following the incident. Your cat will be extremely
confused, because he's simply trying to relieve pain or engage in perfectly natural instinctive behaviors.

Cat Health Threats

Cat Health Threats

Cat Health Threats

Cat Health threats fall into two major categories. Bodily harm from fighting, accidents, or cruel humans is one category. Common illnesses, parasites, and known system weaknesses is the other. An indoor cat has a huge advantage against the bodily harm threats. A cat that lives outdoors (or ventures out often) is subject to many physical threats. It does depend on the environment, busy suburban areas and rural areas are probably the worst. Quiet neighborhoods, with little traffic and few predators have much less risk. The same factors have a bearing on the second category too. If a cat is not exposed to other animals or parasites, and receives proper feeding and care the risk for illness and disease is greatly reduced. There still are some natural causes, like kidney problems, that are unavoidable.
Cats are tough little critters. The common tale of a cat having 9 lives is a result of the ability of a cat to survive under the most adverse conditions. A cat's natural agility, suspicion of everything, and quick reflexes offer a huge advantage against many physical threats. Cats seem to possess a high survival instinct that serves them well too. Almost any cat owner can tell a story or two of a harrowing escape by their pet from almost certain disaster. And if you've ever tried to rescue a feral Tom Cat that didn't want to be rescued, you are certainly aware of their ability to defend against or escape capture. I know from experience that some cats (especially rescued cats) want to go outside. And they will make your life miserable if you don't concede. One solution I've found is to make an outdoor shelter of some kind (like a portable dog kennel - but make sure it has a top of some type) or enclosed area. That way the cat gets to go outside but you've protected them from most threats. I've even seen people put a cat on a leash but none of my cats would ever allow that to happen. The number one cat health threat to an indoor cat is getting over weight. The more excess weight, the greater the risk for all types of health issues (just like in people). Controlling the amount and type of food is important to your cat's health. Some dry food (helps keep their teeth clean too), some high protein soft food, and a few table scraps are all OK. It's when you give them unlimited amounts of all three that the problems start. Playing with your cat can be important when it comes to weight issues. Don't let your cat become a couch potato, try to keep them active. A great simple toy such as a stick with a feature tied to a string at the end can provide lots of exercise. Anything that rolls around is a good toy too since most cats will chase it around. Vaccinations are important and yearly checkups at the Vet can alert you to problems before they become life threatening. Watching your cat for unusual behavior (like not eating or drinking as normal) is important too. Catching any health problems before they become critical can save you lots of frustration and money at the Vet. Urinary and Kidney infections are common in cats. The most common cause appears to be absorbing too much ash elements from prepared cat food, especially the wet variety. Always check the label on any cat food to check for ash content. I don't know what levels are acceptable, so I avoid any brands with ash. Another common cause of urinary and kidney problems are minerals that build up and block the urethra tube. I had a cat that constantly had blockage problems until we changed his food and went to filtered water. A simple filter on your faucet can help both you and you're cats from too many minerals in your water. Speaking of water, you should always allow access to clean water, hydration is important to keeping your cat healthy. It's also recommended that you feed multiple small meals or free feed (cat has 24 hour access to food) than feed one big meal a day. This is true of most animals and people. Small meals are easier to digest and also increase the body's caloric burn rate, which can help with the weight problems too. Hookworms, roundworms, and tapeworms are common parasites that present severe health threats to cats. Hookworms are the worst since they live in the intestines and suck blood from the host. Hookworms can cause death from creating severe anemia in very short periods of time. Roundworms will steal nutrients and make the host more susceptible to many illnesses. Tapeworms will consume nutrients and cause rapid weight loss. Parasites can be visible in fecal matter or be found with blood tests by your Vet. That's why it's good to try and makes sure your cat gets an annual checkup. Or if you notice your cat eating more but not gaining any weight, or becoming listless, you should immediately have your Vet do some fecal and blood tests. If you'd like to learn more about common cat health issues, you can find more information at our website listed below. We haven't got all the answers but we are starting to get some good input about many cat health problems.

How to Keep a Cat Off Furniture

How to Keep a Cat Off Furniture

How to Keep a Cat Off Furniture

Sometimes, cats and furniture just don't mix. One of the most frustrating parts of being a cat owner can be the possibility of having your furniture ripped up! But you don't have to simply accept this as a fact of life. There are things you can do to reduce your cat's desire to put his claws on your sofa:

Declawing your cat is the easiest option, but it's also the most painful for him. Most veterinarians won't even perform the surgery since they believe it's inhumane to the animal. Instead, they will probably advise you to try a scratching post.

Providing multiple scratching prospects is a must for cats, who like to scratch after sleeping and eating. Placing a scratching post in your cat's environment is a great way to encourage his claws to stay off your furniture.

You can try temporarily covering your furniture with something that cats dislike, such as double-sided tape or aluminum foil. Cats can't stand stuff that sticks to them, and they generally avoid the sound of foil. Just make sure the tape won't damage your furniture or your cat.

Provide stimulation so your cat dose not become bored. Boredom is usually the root cause of furniture destruction. Supply your cat with a variety of toys that cover the senses of smell, texture, sound and movement. Observing your cat while he plays with different toys will give you an idea of his preferences.

Make it a habit to clip your cat's nails on a regular basis. This can curb the amount of furniture scratching your cat engages in, or at the very least, it will diminish the damage done by the scratching. Small cats will become easily accustomed to clipping when rewarded with treats following a clip.

If your cat has an affinity for a particular drape in your house, pin a doorknob alarm to it. When the cat tries to climb the curtain, the alarm will sound every time.

Provide endless entertainment for your cat by installing a window perch inside and a bird or squirrel feeder immediately outside. Your cat will spend so much time watching the locals, he'll forget you have furniture!

If you see your cat scratching the furniture, use a squirt bottle to give him a shower and firmly say, "No!" Of course, this only works if you're around to see him scratch.

Taping inflated balloons to the trouble areas may help, as your cat will avoid scratching in a place where he popped a balloon. However, you should only try this if you are around so you can keep your cat from eating the balloon pieces.

Pet supply stores and website sell training devices that deter cats from prohibited areas by emitting aggravating noises. You can also use fragrant deterrents, such as bitter apple sprays or orange peels.

Avoid physical punishments that can produce anxiety or hostility in your cat and will probably only teach them to avoid scratching in your presence. No matter which method you employ, it is unreasonable to think that your cat will stop scratching altogether. Scratching is part of a cat's nature, and if you want to be a cat owner, you'll have to put up with it to a certain degree.

How to Give a Cat a Pill

How to Give a Cat a Pill

How to Give a Cat a Pill

If you have ever attempted to get a small child to swallow a pill, you know how hard it can be. Cats are no better at accepting pills - they generally will not open their mouths for any price, but different than children, cats can fight back with their claws and teeth. So, before you try getting your cat to swallow a pill, it is significant to know a few things about it.

There are lots of different hints put forth by folks on this matter, but many of them--such as attempting to hold a cat down and forcing him to swallow a pill--usually only result in wasted pills and lots of scratches. Other people might suggest crushing the pill, mixing it with butter or spreadable cheese and then spreading this on your cat's fur. The idea is that your cat will lick it off, but there are more adept ways to give your cat medicinal drug!

Here's the easiest way to get your cat to swallow a pill:

From behind, gently grasp your cat's maxilars joint with your thumb and index finger. It is easiest if you pick up your cat while he's sitting up off the ground someplace. Gently draw your cat's head back, elevating the mouth. Cats do not like this, but they won't oppose it. Implement a small amount of pressure to the jaws with your fingers.

Slip a finger between the cat's front teeth and press down on the bottom jaw. Do not be concerned about being bitten; a cat doesn't have any power when its head is bent back. As the cat's mouth is open, take the pill (which you have had in your free hand the whole time) and put it as far back in the cat's mouth as you can as promptly as you are able to. Try to avoid as much contact with the tongue as possible, so the cat doesn't sample the nasty medicine and spit it out.

Allow the cat's mouth to shut and hold him until he swallows, gently rubbing his neck. Then, let the cat go and keep an eye on him for a couple of seconds. A few cats will make believe to swallow and then spit out the pill when you're not looking. Whenever your cat licks his mouth, it is a good indication that he really swallowed.

Accompany the pill with a delicious treat. That way, your cat will connect the pill ritual with something yummy. Enforcing a feeding schedule will help with all your moments of discomfort with your cat.

If you're free-feeding your cat (leaving food out at all times for him to eat as and when he feels like it), stop doing this. Enforcing a feeding schedule has two main benefits: it increases the reward-value of food treats as training devices, and also introduces a semblance of routine into your cat's life (which, believe it or not, most cats actually prefer.)

My Cat Has a Cold

My Cat Has a Cold

My Cat Has a Cold

Just like humans, cats can catch colds, and they do so somewhat frequently. However, colds are not passed on between humans and cats since the viruses that cause colds are species-specific. Simply put we do have a cold advantage over cats: while we can care for our colds with medicine, our pets can't. This means that a cold can become a grave ailment for a cat, especially if you have more than one cat in your household.

Cat cold symptoms are almost identical to human colds: wheezing, sneezing, watery eyes, coughing, mucous seepage. You may also discover what look like cold sores around your cat's mouth or respiratory troubles.

Cat colds are most common during the summer, and they are highly contactable. Your cat can pick one up at the groomer, the vet, the kennel or from any cat it meets on the street.

Generally, a cat cold will run its course in seven to ten days, approximately the same length as the human cold. The cat's immune system will take care of it, so don't try to dispense human cold medication as a remedy. The only time a cat cold becomes dangerous is if the virus spreads, causing a respiratory infection or a secondary infection in the sinuses.

If you think your cat has caught a cold, call your veterinary surgeon. Getting medical involvement at the outset can be significant if the cold advances into something worse. Once your cat develops a respiratory infection, it can come back over and over again. You want to avoid this at all costs.

One of the first signs of a cat cold is a stuffy nose. Keeping an eye on your cat when he eats is an important way to tell if he is suffering from a stuffy nose, since he will not be able to smell his food (normal cat behavior). Typically, a cat that can't smell his food won't even eat or drink. Consequently, if you notice that your cat isn't eating typically, call your veterinarian right away.

Keeping your cat up to date with all the suggested vaccinations is a great way to defend against the two viruses that cause cat colds: feline herpesvirus (FHV) and feline calicivirus (FCV). If possible, the best rule of prevention is to keep your cat inside

Cat ownership involves a certain level of basic, non-negotiable obligations. If you really want the best relationship that it's possible to have with your cat, it's worthwhile taking the time to find out what makes her tick. This implies finding out how to keep her happy and healthy, how to supply her with enough care and nutrition, how to help her adjust to your house (the house training secrets are a definite bonus!), how to prevent and deal with any behavioral troubles that might eventuate, and in general how to attain and keep up the kind of rewarding and mutually caring relationship with your cat that we would all like to have.

Understanding Your Cat: Cat Body Language

Understanding Your Cat: Cat Body Language

Understanding Your Cat: Cat Body Language

We like to think of our cats as our fur-children, even though they really can’t speak to us. Or can they? Cats may not be able to talk to us but they can communicate through body language. Did you know that if your cat wags her tail it’s not a sign of happiness – she’s actually annoyed?

Here’s a few more body language clues to help us discover what our cats are really trying to tell us…

Calm & Content:

Cats who are in a calm and happy state of mind hold their ears alert and pricked. Their tails are still, held either straight up, or relaxed. If your cat is really relaxed, she’ll gaze at you with half-lidded eyes. If she flutters her eyes at you, it means she trusts you and feels safe. Another way to tell if your cat is happy is if she kneads her paws.

If your cat lies down on her side or back and exposes her belly, she’s letting you know that she’s happy, and wouldn’t mind if you came over to give her some love. Often this means she’s inviting you to rub her tummy. But be careful – not all cats like belly rubs. The ones that don’t will soon let you know by grabbing your hand and giving a quick bite.

Pleased to See You:

When your cat is happy to see you, she’ll greet you with her tail held straight up. She’ll rub her face against you, using the scent glands in her forehead, chin and whiskers to ‘mark you’ as part of her territory. She might also purr, but surprisingly, purring isn’t always a sign that your cat is content.

Why do cats purr, anyway?

Kittens are able to purr by the time they’re two days old. It’s their way of communicating with their moms. As cats grow older, they continue to purr to indicate happiness. But did you know that cats also purr when they’re sick or anxious? Some animal experts believe it’s a form of self-soothing, like when a person hums to stave off nerves. Cats also purr to show submission to another cat, or to indicate friendliness.

Hunting, Curious & Playful:

When your cat’s in stalking or hunting mode, she’ll drop her body low to the ground. She’ll keep her tail down, while the tip twitches. Just before she’s about to pounce, she might wag her butt.

If your cat is mildly curious about something, she’ll hold her tail at half mast and slowly switch it from side to side. An upright tail curved to one side or held in a ‘question mark’ means your kitty’s excited, and might be ready to play.

Wants Something:

You’ll know when your cat wants something from you – whether it’s food, affection or clean litter – when she leans into your legs with her whole body. Some cats will even do a little hop as they rub your legs. This is kitty language for, “Hey, you up there! We need something down here!”

Annoyed:

It’s easy to tell when a cat starts to get annoyed. When your cat’s fed up or had enough petting, she’ll flick the end of her tail back and forth. When she’s really annoyed, she’ll lash her tail back and forth. If she thumps her tail, watch out! She’s really upset. Growling and swiping at you with her paws also are a result of extreme kitty annoyance.

Fear & Aggression:

When your cat is afraid, she tries to make herself look smaller. She tucks her tail close to her body and hunkers down into a ball before backing away. She’ll lay her ears back sideways and her pupils will be dilated.

If she’s afraid but on the defensive, she’ll bare her teeth and expose her paws as she confronts the threat in a sideways stance.

Aggressive cats look like “Halloween cats.” They try to look as scary and intimidating as possible by arching their backs and puffing up the fur along their hackles and tails. This is known as piloerection. Your cat will also pull her whiskers back, with her paw raised and ready to swat, while her tensely-curved-tail will lash from side to side.

Hissing is an obvious sign of a fearful or aggressive cat. If she’s ready to bite, she’ll show her teeth, and give low warning growls.

Although these behaviors should generally help you decipher what your cat is thinking, every cat is an individual with their own personal nuances and body language. Taking the time to figure out what your cat is really trying to say will deepen your bond with one another.

House Cats. Eight Tips for Keeping Indoor Cats Happy

House Cats. Eight Tips for Keeping Indoor Cats Happy

House Cats. Eight Tips for Keeping Indoor Cats Happy

The number of house cats is increasing. More and more cat owners are deciding that it's no longer safe for their cat to go outside unsupervised; cars, other animals, poisons and malicious people are just some of the reasons.

Indoor cats can lead very happy lives, but they do need to be entertained more than outdoor cats. If house cats aren't stimulated enough, they'll get bored and may become stressed or exhibit cat behavior problems such as scratching the furniture and ignoring their litter box.

Here are 8 tips for keeping your house cat happy and entertained:

1. Make sure he has plenty of cat toys. He should have toys in every room. To add interest, split his toys into two or three batches and rotate them every few days.

2. Get him some good cat furniture. A scratching post is a must. Two or three in different areas of the house is even better. If you can afford it, cat trees and cat condos are great for entertaining house cats. If you're on a tight budget, you can make a cat condo using boxes, carpet, logs etc.

3. Use catnip. If your cat likes catnip, sprinkle it around his scratching post, bed and other favorite areas.

4. Provide seats for your cat near windows. Cats love to watch what's going on outside, and to sit in the sun. Window views at garden or street level are likely to provide more entertainment than those at higher levels in the house.

5. Grow some cat grass in a pot. This is a good substitute for eating grass outside.

6. Get a DVD specifically made for cats. Yes they do exist! Some cats love them and some aren't interested, but they're relatively cheap so it's worth a try.

7. Use a computer screensaver with swimming tropical fish. Some cats love this - it's like ultimate cat TV.

8. Teach your cat to walk on a leash. This does take some time and patience, but if you can do it you can then take your house cats outdoors in total safety.

The 5 Painful Conditions of Poor Cat Urinary Tract Health

The 5 Painful Conditions of Poor Cat Urinary Tract Health

The 5 Painful Conditions of Poor Cat Urinary Tract Health

Cat urinary tract health care remains one of the top challenges facing caring cat owners. Be on the lookout for the symptoms cats show when they have poor cat urinary tract health or other feline urinary tract disorder(FLUTD). You or someone you know probably has endured the human version of a urinary tract infection. There is an intense, persistent urge to urinate accompanied by a burning sensation when urinating. The urine has a strong odor and there may even be blood in the urine. In the cat world, these symptoms are very similar except that progressed cases of urinary tract infection in cats can lead to a very painful death. Cats of any age may suffer from the disorder, but older cats are more susceptible. Another similarity to human UTI is that both female and male cats can suffer from poor cat urinary tract health. In fact, male cats are more susceptible to one condition more so than female cats -- urinary stones. 5 Conditions of Poor Cat Urinary Cat Health 1. Incessant licking in the genital area
2. Blood in the urine
3. Urinary(Bladder) stones also called uroliths
4. Urethral obstruction
5. Death The only way your cat knows how to deal with an itch or burning sensation in his genital area is to lick and lick and lick. One clue to a urinary tract infection in cats is that you find urine on the floor, or on tile or in the bathtub -- really a blessing because you can see it. Blood may be visible in the urine. However, if you don't see any blood that doesn't mean its not there. A trained eye using a microscope will note if there is blood in the urine. Urinary stones are a huge reason to alert on changes in your cat's behavior pointing out urinary tract infections in cats. These stones are mineral crystals formed in the bladder. When the stones leave the bladder they travel down the urethra tube to exit the body. The stones become lodged in the urethra and block the passage of urine. This problem occurs more in male cats than females as the male urethra tube is narrower. Smaller stones cause a blockage where the female's wider urethra allows the smaller crystals to pass through. This is where time becomes a critical factor. If the stones aren't dislodged naturally or medically, your cat endures a painful death. You have 72 hours from the onset to deal with the stones. Unfortunately, your cat may not display symptoms for 24 to 48 hours. Causes It was once thought that certain minerals in cat food contributed to urinary stones. Bacteria can also lead to poor cat urinary tract health. Today, veterinarians pay more attention to the ph level of the cat's urine. Ph is the measurement of the acid or alkaline level of the urine. Veterinarians recommend the ph level be around 6.0 to 6.5. Prevention Ask your vet to check the ph level in your cat's urine. Place clean, fresh water bowls throughout the house and outdoors so that water is very available to your cats. Provide smaller meals more frequently. Minimize major routine changes. Make no mistake about it, you can help your cat stick to a simple, natural pet care program that promotes vital cat urinary tract health. There are a number of natural remedies available that are blends of herbs tested and proven to treat painful and chronic urinary tract infection in cats.

Chewing Disorders in Cats

Chewing Disorders in Cats

Chewing Disorders in Cats

There are cats, which are universally characterized as finicky eaters, who orally obsess upon objects such as fabric, string and plastic.  They can proceed to suck, chew or ingest these materials as well.

Some animal behaviorists believe kittens that are orphaned or weaned too early were never taught by their mother to stop nursing.  Consequently, later in life the cat may pick up where it left off using a synthetic mother-substitute.  A little chewing or sucking is absolutely normal for inquisitive kittens, however, it can be a problem when the behavior is repeated over and over again or damaging to the cat and/or household that has been thought to be an obsessive-compulsive disorder.  The disorder can occur with any cat breed of any age, but wait; animal researchers now believe there appears to be some genetic components to these behaviors.

Some veterinary behaviorists believe that when it comes to chewing disorders, wool sucking and chewing in Oriental breeds (the Siamese and Burmese Cats) are the number one problem seen for diagnosis and treatment on the behaviorist's couch.

Kittens are much like human toddlers, therefore, many of their weird chewing or ingestive behaviors can be related to their natural desire to play and put things in their mouths for exploration purposes.

It is the adult cats that suck, chew, or eat strange things who are more likely afflicted with a compulsive disorder.  Some veterinary behaviorists theorize these cats may be simply following the saying of, "if it feels good....do it!"  Others theorize that the act of chewing releases endorphins in the brain that gives cats a "meow high."  When these cats suck or chew, the happy-hormones are released, and consequently these cats become happy-hormone addicts.

If you are experiencing a cat with a chewing disorder, the experience is certainly a challenge.   You may find yourself trying to cat-proof your entire house very much like you would do for young human toddlers.  And it may seem, regardless of how good you cat-proof things, the cat still finds something "unusual or abnormal" to chew on or eat.

The most favorite kind of materials for cats seems to be "wool fabric," especially in the winter season.  Fabric chewing cats like the crunch of the fabric.  This is especially true of cats fed only soft foods.  Behaviorists theorize that cats start this bad habit because they are bored, anxious, stressed or inadvertently rewarded for the behavior.

Tips for owners of cat chewing disorders:

  • The best preventive for chewing disorders and strange appetites is to provide kittens with proper chew toys and interactive forms of exercise
  • You can teach kittens good habits by praising him or her for good chewing and healthy, desirable behaviors.
  • Nutritional deficiencies are seldom the reason behind chewing and strange appetites

Cat chewing disorders can be a serious health and medical problem.  For example, imagine if your cat chewed and swallowed something such as your daughter's hair crunchy.  The cat would probably require a major surgery to remove the foreign object.  Eating substances that can cause intestinal blockage are the most dangerous, and can carry a high fatality rate.

Experts recommend:

  • Stopping the nasty chewing habits before the cat gains a substantial appetite for them and stops being a cat with regular routines of playing, resting and grooming itself

Treatment might include:

  • Keeping household changes to a minimum
  • Switching "good chew" objects for bad ones
  • Using repellents or other deterrents around taboo areas
  • As a last resort, drug therapy
  • Remove wool or plastic or any other foreign objects for the cat and give them dry food, lettuce or whole baby carrots
  • Provide alternative oral stimulation in the form of rawhide soaked in chicken broth or other dog chew treats
  • Create a cat-tractive window box filled with catnip, grass and other items designed to lure your cat away from the offending items
  • Bored cats can become destructive cats.  Provide plenty of places to climb, crept, leap and race, use cat activity centers and the newer interactive toys to engage kittens mind and body
  • Consult with a veterinarian at the earliest signs of a problem as treatment is always easiest in the early stages of any kind of problem

Tips of How to Keep Your Indoor Cat Happy

Tips of How to Keep Your Indoor Cat Happy

Tips of How to Keep Your Indoor Cat Happy

Scratching posts should be a staple item for every household with pet cats and cat catteries as well.  The scratching post should be sturdy so it does not fall over when the cat uses it.  It should be tall enough so the cat can stretch upward to scratch and made of material the cat likes.

Location of scratching posts:

  • They should be placed next to an area where the cat already scratches
  • Put scratching posts near sleeping areas, entrances to rooms and long routes to food and litter box (I might add a little note here about the three silver Persians I have now.  They must be pure angels or I am just accommodating them very well.  They are all three very well behaved.  I am having no behavior problems from them.  They seem at peace and full of contentment.)

Another important aspect of making your cat feel at home, welcome or happy during the day is providing adequate resting areas.  Resting areas must be:

  • Safe
  • Secure
  • Private
  • Away from people and other animals

Cats especially need opportunities for privacy and quiet time.  They sometimes are willing to use a cat tent and other special made items for them, however, many cats enjoy just a cardboard box with a nice soft blanket placed in a quiet spot for them.  Cats also find their own very secluded places for private time that includes:

  • Under your bed
  • In a spare room
  • In a closet

And what about perching needs for the cat?  Cats love to perch in areas way up high, on a window sill looking outside to the rest of the world while they are quiet, secluded and safe inside.  Cats are curious and vigilant by nature.  Sitting in high places allows them to observe their environment.  They like to see, hear and smell what is going on from a safe distance.

Cats make good use of their vertical space and value this as much or more than floor space.  They may even find their own high perching spots on top of a bookcase, kitchen cupboards or a refrigerator.  Spots near a window are especially desirable.  Try to provide places for birds to gather near the cat's window perch.  They love to watch the birds fly around.  There are many types of cat furniture that accommodates the cat's need to climb and perch.  Cat towers, trees or condos are dearly loved.  Place them near a window if possible.

The need for play is unique to each cat.  Some cats like to play more than others.  Play activities are closely related to hunting activities.  Watch the types of games your cat likes to play.  Recently I bought a little bird toy for my cats.  Each time the bird is rolled around it makes a bird-like noise.  I thought how cute this would be for them.  They will just love this toy.  It is the only toy so far they all stay away from.  They seem to be startled by the sound, so they do not go near that toy bird.  Other cats, by contrast, may love it.  All of them are amazed at jumping feathers and love to run after them (the hunt), then catch them with their hands and try to "eat" the prey of feathers.  I play this game often with them using the fishing poles with feathers attached on the end.  Cats have a need to stalk and pounce.  They stalk the feather and pounce on it.  There are many other types of cat toys that dangle and move.  I am staying away from toys that make noise as my cats are startled by the noise makers.

I notice my Persians have their eyes half closed a lot.  They look a bit lazy and sleepy eyed.  Their environment is extremely quiet.  I put on the Van Morrison music one day to see their reaction.  Their eyes popped open very wide as if to say:  "What is that?"  "I never heard such as this."  Taz ran in behind something to hide.  Diamond was the perkiest.  I concluded Diamond really liked Van Morrison's song of "Brown-eyed Girl."

When you purchase cat toys, be sure most of them provide opportunity for the cat to play by itself.  Cats are easily bored (sounds like me), so keep a selection of toys you can rotate occasionally.  When I clean their area, I put all their toys in a basket.  After cleaning, I get them out and they act as if they have found "new" toys.  In a few hours, the toys just lay on the floor untouched.  The cats returned to sleepy-eyed look!

Diamond and Fairy like the low-tech items like ping-pong balls and different shapes of little balls.  They roll them over their floor using their paws.  I have also noticed these two girls as if playing "roll the ball over the floor to each other."  This is real cute to watch and I never have my video camera out in time to catch these little games.

Taz is still not old enough to mate, but he spends a fair amount of his time following around after Fairy during her season times.  When he is not doing this, he desires to sit next to me or in my lap.  He is more of a lap cat than Fairy and Diamond.  They all learn very quickly and as I said before, I am so very pleased with this threesome.  I have heard that Persians were very hard to groom.  This is not true of my three.  Their coats are silky texture.  The most trouble I have had is at bath time and keeping their faces clean.  I won't give away all my secrets in these articles.  I have found a miracle routine for cleaning their faces.  All who purchase kittens from me will receive the "miracle routine" grooming instructions I have learned and established with my particular lines.  Follow the link in this article to learn more about us, to sign up for a free newsletter and add your name to our waiting list for some very exquisite silver Persian kittens.  If you like silver Persians, you will not be disappointed in the kittens we produce for you.  We will be having only a few litters per year, so you will need to express your interest early and fill out our contact form to be added to our list.

Reading Cat Body Language

Reading Cat Body Language

Reading Cat Body Language

Cats are very communicative with body language and sounds.  They are often stereotyped as being distant and uncommunicative because of their solitary nature and independence.  I doubt the cats who live in the wild communicate the same as our domesticated cats.  It is my opinion; the domesticated cat probably learns how to communicate with body language and sounds from their human companions and other companion animals.

My Persians, Taz and Fairy, are now 8 months old.  They are starting to communicate more than when I first got them at 8 weeks old.  It is truly interesting to sit quietly with them and observe what they have to say to me through their eyes and body language.  Of course, I probably interpret what they are saying according to my own feelings, background and the specifics of my own personality.

At times, Fairy hardly acknowledges I am in their space, and then at other times, she will make it a point to put her paws on my knees while making direct eye contact with me, she seems to be saying, "I want to sit with you."  I pick her up; she looks deeply into my eyes with her eyes wide open and at times starts to pat me on the shoulder with one of her paws.  I feel like she is possibly saying, "I really like you, mom," or "I love you."  She is purring the entire as well.  The visit lasts for 5 minutes or so and then she jumps down returning to her window perch or some other favorite spot in her space.

Fairy also interprets my body communications and knows exactly what is going to happen.  When I am at her sink, preparing to put their daily treat of soft Fancy Feast food in their bowls, she comes quickly to start nibbling in her bowl.  Fairy eats her treat from the sink (this sink is in the cat cattery area and separate of my own).  At other times, at the sink, I prepare their face cleaning powder and liquid.  Fairy knows this is not something she can eat.  She observes to see what I am doing and when she determines it is not her meal, she does not even try to come near the sink.  She learned the difference in what I was doing at sink by observing my body language.  I said nothing to her in words.

Anyone who thinks only dogs are communicative is quite misinformed or misguided.  Cats communicate very effectively.  We just have to quietly observe and listen to what they have to say.  Of all three cats I have now, Fairy is the only one who wags her tail like a dog when she is feeling happy and content.

The following is a list of simple body language communications as determined by cat behaviorists:

•·         Arched back, fur on end:  Among kittens, this could mean "play with me."  With older cats, it might mean "leave me alone."  If the movement is accompanied by a deep growl, stiff movement or solid eye contact, you can probably conclude the cat does not want to be bothered at the moment.

•·         Kneading with paws:  This is typically seen only in small kittens.  Cat behaviorists think this can be the kitten trying to comfort itself.  It is not usually seen in adult cats.  My Diamond does this when I hold her.  I felt she may have done this with her "cat mother," while nursing.

•·         Leg rubbing:  This is natural marking behavior for cats.  Taz does this while I am at the sink preparing their food.  Fairy is on top the counter, and Taz is at my feet, rubbing his face against my legs.  Cat behaviorists say the cat is covering you with pheromones from glands on their face so you and everyone else in the space will have a comforting group odor.  It can also obtain favorable attention for the cat which leads to petting.  I just assumed Taz knew something was happening especially for him that he liked very much and he was actually petting me for preparing his meals.

•·         Hissing:  A hissing cat is not happy at all and a warning that you better leave her alone.  Fairy is the only cat so far that has made some horrendous hissing sounds at me.  This was during her bath.  In general, cats hate water.  Unfortunately, they do have to be bathed from time to time.  A Persian cat does well with a bath about every two weeks.  I spoke softly to Fairy, made very slow movements, turn the water on first while talking softly to her, wrapped her in a towel, allowing only her head out until she was relaxed enough at the sink and the running water to unwrap her and then preceded with the shower.  She still was unhappy, but got over it.  After her bath, she hated to be dried as well and would kick her feet as if to sling the water back in my face.  She tolerated things until dry, and then she was soooo happy, she began to roll on her back and purr.  The cats love how they feel after a bath, but very much hate the water and bath time.  It takes some patience, but they learn to tolerate it after awhile.

Animal experts say when a cat rolls over and bares their belly, he or she is giving you the ultimate compliment, and it is their way of saying they trust you.  I received Fairy's message after her bath and blow dry as just this - a compliment, or like saying "thank-you, I do feel better now."

While on the subject of cats and water, just why do many cats hate water?  Some theorize there are several reasons for this that includes:

•·         Cats descend from arid regions

•·         Have land-based prey

•·         Are fussy groomers (think there is no further need to clean them since they constantly clean themselves)

Animal experts say our modern house cats lived in the semi-arid regions of Africa.  These wild cats obtained water from their food and by necessity they learned to live without a source of drinking water.  They say cats don't actually "hate" the water, it is just because of their instinct they inherited from over hundreds of generations ago tells them "there is no good reason to dip their toes in water."   This actually is the message I hear from my cats.  They look at me as if to say, "Just what do you think you are doing here, I don't need this."

Helping Cats Adapt to New Baby in the Home

Helping Cats Adapt to New Baby in the Home

Helping Cats Adapt to New Baby in the Home

There are usually three major concerns of new or expectant parents when it comes to mixing pets with their family. Those are:

•· How to prevent pet behavior problems when the baby arrives

•· How to introduce the baby to the family cat

•· How to keep the baby safe around the cat

It is not uncommon for pet owners to assume jealousy is the cause of problem behaviors associated with the arrival of a new baby; however, this is not always the case. Cats become stressed by significant alterations in the environment. Family interactions between each other can cause distress for the cat. Stress is usually the main cause of the problems. The following changes all affect the cat:

•· Changes in feeding

•· Changes in exercise routines

•· Changes in play schedules

•· Changes in what the cat is allowed or not allowed to do

•· Changes in how the pet gets attention

•· Inconsistencies in the way the owner interacts with the pet

•· New structures and odors in the home

All the above can lead to problem behaviors in the cat.

Cats do not instinctively know how to act around children. Children need to learn to interact with cats as well. Most cats accept the new arrival without a lot of fuss; however, there are always exceptions to this rule. Some cats will not accept a new baby in their family. In addition, cats can be unpredictable around children. Their behavior can range from total avoidance to intense interest. There is good news in that most problems can be avoided with some forethought, planning and training.

The number one rule to follow is: Limit the amount of changes the cat will have to experience because of the new arrival.

Cat's reactions to babies can be:

•· Adapts quickly to the new baby either by ignoring it completely or seeking baby out for investigation or social contact with some cheek rubbing, etc. Of course, you want to monitor all the contact, the cat may decide to check out the new baby in ways you would not approve of such as a quick scratch down the cheek, maybe not even meaning it to be malicious.

•· Other cats may respond with inquisitive, playful and affectionate overtures toward the new baby.

•· All cat and baby interactions need to be closely supervised.

•· It is rare that cats spread any kind of disease to humans. Most problems occur from a scratch or bite that can be avoided with close supervision.

Three basic considerations for helping cats best adapt to new babies include:

•· Adapt the cat's schedule so it is prepared for the arrival

•· Adapt owner interactions with cat to be similar to what will happen when the baby arrives so there is not a lot of sudden change.

•· Adapt cat's environment slowly to prepare for baby's arrival. For example, if you will need to keep the cat totally separate from the family unit during certain times of the day, then start this routine before the baby arrives. If you will need to change the cat's feeding station, play times or anything else concerning the cat's schedule, do this well in advance of the baby's arrival so the cat is well accustomed to these changes.

•· Most families have the baby's room and furniture already in place before baby's arrival. This is more important from the cat's point of view. Be sure to have all new pieces of furniture in place well in advance of baby's arrival. Some cats are stressed by new structures and new odors. Give your cat time to adjust to baby's necessities.

•· Cats may be a little fearful or anxious of strange sounds. Try to record baby noises of cooing, screaming, and crying and replay the sounds for the cat to become well accustomed to new sounds of baby.

Cat Beds

Cat Beds

Cat Beds

Cat beds are not only nice to sleep in, but they can become necessary to your cat's health. If you have a lightweight cat that has trouble with their weight, a heated cat bed can stave off potential colds. Heated cat beds are also great for older cats and pets with arthritic and joint ailments

.Cat beds are just the ticket for giving your cat its own space and what's great about them is that there are a ton of fantastic options perfect for any sized feline. Cat beds come in a wide variety of styles, sizes and materials. For example, you can get just plain and flat or a fluffy bed that is just a layer of foam covered in fabric. Cat beds are easy to find, are usually fairly affordable, and give your cat a comfortable space of his own.

There are different types of cat beds but the one thing they must do is be softer than the floor. Cat beds differ from human beds in that they rest on the ground without a frame. Usually, cat beds have a thick cushion on the bottom to keep the pets warm and soft to the cat. Having a cat bed can indeed be beneficial because cats do take pleasure in sleeping.

Most  cat beds lack sheets or blankets, but many have a coverlet, I have even seen cat beds with of all things a canopy, that can be removed and laundered.

Cat beds are nice, but there are vary few cats that restrict themselves to one sleeping place. You may find them on your bed, the back of the couch or your favorite chair cat also love sleeping in the window.

You can also have heated throws that  go over your furniture and still keep the cat vary warm.Heated cat beds are safe and provide your cat with a bit of comfort for his naps. Or,maybe something you may consider is a cat igloo type beds which provide the cat with a bit more privacy.

That is something that most cats crave when they are sleeping. Heated cat beds are very useful when the weather is cold outside. Also if your cat in having a problem with joints or just getting a little older.Cat beds are ideal for those pet owners who have allergies to pet furs.

It will be very important that your cat has its own bed to sleep on, and not on your own bed. Cat beds are a fun accessory for a home and for a cat.

If you buy a TV based upon its picture quality compared to others in the group, then this is the set for you. Picture quality is outstanding! It's a little pricier than many, but then, you get what you pay for. I also like the fact that the bezel is a dull black rather than the gloss black of many other sets (no reflection). It arrived quickly, and nothing was broken. I bought the set to replace an older flat screen I use on the porch. This set is too good to use on a porch - so it's in my office now.......

Love this Sony T.V. This was a replacement for a 22 yr. old Sony. Wouldn't purchase any other brand of television!......

Customer Buzz

At the price you may not at first think of this little SONY as a bargain, but wait until you've owned if for a month or so. If you have wasted time trying other, less expensive sets, as many of us have, then you will know what I mean by bargain!
Marvelous picture. Easy to set up and program.Easily moved around. I don't understand the negative comments about sound. What do you want?....a stereo system or a television set??!
This is a GREAT little television. ......

Customer Buzz

I'm probably not the best person to review a TV set because the only other one I'm thoroughly familiar with is the 25-year-old RCA set that this one replaced.

Anyhow, I'm very happy with the decision. The image is very crisp and clear, and there are numerous input options. I've managed to set up three different feeds into the TV: one from the cable box, one from the DVD player, and one direct from an antenna. All of them work well.

If you're used to an old-fashioned TV set that you just turn on and off and change channels on (as I was), this one may take some getting used to as among various other options you can choose among multiple inputs and decide whether you want the image to be normal-sized, widened, or zoomed.

That is in fact my one quibble, though I'm not sure if it's the TV's fault or what: I would like to be able to get an image that takes up as much of the screen real-estate as possible without being stretched in any way, and in some configurations that just doesn't seem to be possible. Either there's wasted space around all four edges, or it's zoomed so that the edges of the image are off the screen.

But all-in-all I'm very satisfied with both the quality and the price.

Very neet little box that delivers superior quality images to 2 appliances
at the same time.......

Customer Buzz

I have my PS3 connected to my TV through my AV Amp via HDMI, but unfortunately the Amp wont pass through the PS3's FULL RGB signal, resulting in the blacks being dark green, which is slightly annoying.
Options available, connect the PS3 direct to the TV,(best picture but no HD sound), or use the existing setup, (HD sound but iffy picture), or get a splitter.
This little beauty solved the problem,I just plugged it in and away we go, no more than a minute to set up. PS3 connected to the input, one output to the TV, the other to the Amp, thus eliminating the Amp's signal pass through problem.
So I now have the best of both, best picture as the splitter allows the FULL RGB signal to pass through to the TV, and HD sound as the PS3 is also connected to the Amp.
Top notch bit of kit, delivered next day, with the peace of mind of a no quibble return policy if its not compatible, which was the main deciding factor for me as I was unsure whether the splitter would pass through the FULL RGB signal, because lets face it, the £300 Amp I was using didn't!!......

Customer Buzz

Great compact splitter, which comes with a seperate power supply for ensuring compatibility with whatever kit you're going to use.
I've just upgraded to Full HD and looked around for quite a while in order to ensure I got the most of my new kit. Having both Full HD 40" TV & Full HD Projector(80" image), I wanted to be able to switch between any source to any output, i.e. independantly control what I watch on either TV or projector, so needing lots of cables and splitters I required top end stuff. Neet supply a full range of HDMI & DVI cables along with amps/splitters & switches. This kit does the bussines and not only meets my present need but superceeds all the standards for Full HD available now. Would highly recommend.......

Customer Buzz

Great little product - 2 outputs being the seller. I now have my Xbox on two tv's one for me and one for missus so no more arguing - just bought another for the PS3!! Simply plug and play. Don't forget you will need three HDMIs for this product but they are going pretty cheap now. Separate power source is no issue just used an adapter and its so small I velcro'd (sic) it to the side of the power brick. ......

Customer Buzz

This is a brilliant device. It does exactly what it says straight out of the package with no problems. No setup, just plug and go.
I used it to split the output from a Humax Foxsat-HDR to a Panasonic TV and SA-BX500.
Two LEDs (which are rather bright) indicate the status of each output.
No instructions - but it doesn't need them.
I can highly recommend this.

How to Choose Cat Scratching Posts

How to Choose Cat Scratching Posts

How to Choose Cat Scratching Posts

Most families have at least a pet in their homes and often, this pet is a cat, since what can be more adorable than a cat that we can spoil when we get home? However, although there are many cat lovers out there, one thing is sure: all cats scratch and as a consequence they end up ruining our furniture, our carpets and other of our belongings. If this is your situation, there’s no need to despair because nowadays there is a way to keep your cat from scratching your goods.

Cats scratch all the time and as long as they are not provided with cat scratching posts, they will use your furniture for playing and scratching. If you are interested in a cat scratching post, you should know that the scratching surface varies from a carpet covered with sisal rope or artificial surface coverings. Furthermore, the scratching post can be tall, short, round, horizontal or vertical and it is entirely up to you to decide which of these suits best the needs of your cat.

Before selecting cat scratching posts, we advise you to consider the following tips. First of all, for best results, make sure the scratching post is tall enough for your cat to scratch her full height. Next, keep in mind that a good cat scratching post should have a base which ensures the necessary stability. This is important because if the cat feels insecure on the scratching post she will not use it.

Don’t forget to choose a cat scratching post which combines different covered surfaces. It is not a great idea to train your cat to scratch ion the carpet because they may not distinguish the acceptable carpet from the carpet on the floors. We recommend trying sisal fiber because it is durable, attractive to cats, cheap and lasts much longer than a carpet.

However, if your cat is not accustomed to using cat scratching posts, you will need to train your cat choose the post and not your furniture. Whenever you bring a cat into your home, make sure you will show her how to use the scratching post.  Also, show your cat how to scratch and don’t try to physically force it by holding her paws because she won’t like it and she will reject the cat scratching post. The most efficient way of training your cat use the post is by means of rewards and lures.

If the scratching post looks like fun, surrounded by toys and other attractive items, the cat will definitely be drawn to it. Make sure you keep the cat scratching posts nearby to where the cats sleep, because most of them scratch after waking. The location of the scratching post is important because if your cat doesn’t like the place you have chosen for it, she will not use it.

It is not a revelation for any of us the fact that cats scratch all the time, but it might be news for some of you to learn that cats can be trained and shown where to scratch. Thus, by using cat scratching posts, your carpets and furniture will not be damaged any longer. Take into account your cat’s preferences when buying and setting up her scratching post.

Kittens are the most adorable animals and therefore it is a pleasure to keep them into our homes and spoil them as much as we can. Although we understand your love for cats, we are also aware of the fact that they can damage your assets and we are here to put at your disposal our effective cat scratching posts. Once your cat starts liking the cat scratching post, she won’t touch your furniture.

I was debating between buying the 58" and the 63", and I am so glad that I make my decision towards the 63". This TV is just great, the picture quality is just superb than any other TV in the same level, actually this TV has a better quality that those on the higher levels and more pricy. I have already three month with the TV and I loved more every time I watch it.
If you can't make your mind between the 58" and the 63", put it this way, if you are going to buy a nice TV and spend the money WHY NOT GO FOR THE BEST ONE?........Good Look.......

great picture on the Tv. delivery was on time. Tv was unloaded, brought into my home, unpacked and hooked to the cable. no complaints at all. ......

Customer Buzz

I'm not much on doing these reviews, but I have to tell you that if you are looking for this size TV you will most likely love the set.

I had some concern buying the Plazma because my room is very bright and my old set was difficult to watch on a bright day. This set has an anti-glare feature that REALLY works.

I'll not spend a lot of time raving about all the great aspects of the product, but you can believe all the positive remarks made by others. It is all that they claim:) Dollar for dollar...a tremendous bargain!......

Customer Buzz

Best price we could find on the Samsumg 63-Inch 1080p Plasma we wanted. Amazon informed us of the tracking of the shipment from the minute we ordered it. Best of all was the "white glove" delivery service and set up. An overall excellent purchasing experience. Thanks, Amazon--you did it again!......

Customer Buzz

First one we received had a strange defect - It'd randomly start scanning for channels. Samsung support couldn't solve it on the phone, so a service call was arranged. We'd just received the TV, so I emailed amazon that night and was contacted by morning. No questions asked, they were sending a new TV. Talk about prompt service.

Ceva had delivered the first one and a few days later they were back with its replacement. Painless.

After just over a month of ownership, we're really smitten with this TV. Beautiful picture quaility, easy to navigate controls. If I were doing this all over again, I'd buy the same TV.

Thanks for the exemplary service, amazon.......
