How to Clean Cat Urine, and a Few Tips for Removing Cat Urine Odours From Around the House

How to Clean Cat Urine, and a Few Tips for Removing Cat Urine Odours From Around the House

How to Clean Cat Urine, and a Few Tips for Removing Cat Urine Odours From Around the House

If you are a cat owner then you will probably be aware of the problem of how to clean cat urine and removing cat urine odours. It’s not just a question of mopping it up and going over it with some warm soapy water, this may seem to clean it up but it is just a quick fix and you will soon have that cat urine smell coming through again. The main problem of removing cat urine odours and the cat urine itself (especially on soft furnishings and carpets) is that it is usually not detected right away. It’s often not until you get that familiar cat urine smell coming through that you realise that your cat has not been using its litter box, but has been urinating where it should not. If you do not find any places where your cat has urinated straight away then this is when the problem of that awful cat urine smell begins. If cat urine is allowed to dry it starts to form into crystals, these crystals are what makes the removal of the cat urine smell so difficult. You may think that you have done a good clean up job, but as soon as these crystals become damp or moist then they start to release that smell again. This is why it is so important to know how to clean cat urine thoroughly. For one way of how to remove cat urine from small or light patches you can make an effective potion using one part distilled white vinegar mixed with two parts warm water. After blotting up as much of the cat urine as possible with paper towels, scrub the affected area with this mixture. Once it has dried go over it again this time with just warm water and then allow to dry thoroughly. For cleaning old or heavily stained areas where your cat has urinated more than once, (this is very likely, as cats can smell where they have messed before even when you think you have done a good job cleaning it up, and they will urinate there again and again.) I would recommend renting a wet-vac machine from a tool hire store. These machines work like a vacuum cleaner, they force clean water through the carpet and then suck up the dirty stained water back into the machine. When it comes to how to clean cat urine from upholstery you will have to be a bit more gentle. Dab the affected area with paper towels or a soft cloth to remove as much of the urine as possible. Using another soft cloth go over the area with your vinegar water mix gently rubbing in a circular motion working from the outside inwards. Again rinse with plain warm water and then dry gently with a hand held hairdryer. Once any soiled area has been thoroughly cleaned and dried, I would recommend using a good quality pet odour neutralizer which you can buy from your local pet store. Follow the instructions carefully to avoid any damage to your carpets or furniture. These are just a few easy steps to take on how to remove cat urine, and removing cat urine odours. A lot of these accidents could be avoided by potty training your cat, this may sound an obvious answer but you will be surprised just how effective and easy cat potty training can be. Just following a few simple training techniques could save you a fortune on cleaning materials, and of course you will no longer have to put up with that lovely cat urine smell.

Senior Cats Have Senior Moments Too!

Senior Cats Have Senior Moments Too!

Senior Cats Have Senior Moments Too!

The increased availability and advances made in animal care and medication has now afforded our pet cats a much longer life than ever before. It is not so unusual these days for a cat to live well beyond 16 years of age and as much as we benefit from having our pets with us longer, it does give rise to some health problems associated with the older cat. Just like us humans the senior cat will encounter general wear and tear on their bodies and general changes to their lifestyle, such as stiff joints, loss of appetite, sleep changes and other age related illnesses. These changes will start to become apparent to the cat owner after the pet reaches the age of 10 and often the first signs are general slowing down and becoming less active in their day-to-day routine. However it is not just physical changes that could affect the senior cat, mental abilities may also be affected. A condition known as cognitive dysfunction syndrome or CDS can affect older cats and is similar to the human illness of Alzheimer’s disease. Symptoms include becoming generally confused about where they are, who you are and forgetting where the litter tray is etc. CDS can be quite a distressing situation for the cat and will often cause changes in the cat’s behaviour. Examples of some of these behaviours are: 1. Pacing around a room as if they are unsure where they are and are exploring it for the first time, or going from room to room looking for food and or the litter tray.
2. Loud persistent meowing, especially at nighttime. Again this is thought to be because the cat is unsure of their surroundings and is calling out in distress or for your attention to reassure them.
3. Being either over clingy to their owners or becoming more wary or changing their behaviour towards their owners. In these situations, medication may be able to be prescribed by the vet to calm the distressed cat, but also the cat owner can help by reducing the amount of rooms the cat has access to so that it is less confusing for them and playing soft quiet music in the room where the cat is may help to reassure them my providing extra reassurance especially at night time. Cat owners also need to be aware of other changes to their elderly cats behaviour and needs to be able to provide the right care and comfort for their pet. Litter Tray habits may change due to the cat’s inability to climb easily into it as they once did due to arthritis or stiff joints. By making sure that several litter trays are provided around the home with at least one low side will make it far more convenient for the senior cat to use them. Appetite issues may arise die to the fact that elderly cats may have a reduced sense of smell. This is important to a cat to stimulate their appetite and desire for a particular food. Changing food brands regularly and feeding only wet canned food, which is the most pungent is the best thing a cat owner can do for their old cat. Pouring a little hot water onto the food will also increase its smell.
Sleeping patterns may change as well. These changes can either be an increased amount of sleep and activity carried out by the cat, or being awake all night pacing the house and meowing. In either case there is not much a cat owner can do but to try and encourage gentle play with a ball for the lethargic cat to try and increase their alertness or to be sympathetic with the night time cat and try to confine them to a cosy comfortable room during the night. As with any change in cat behaviour old or young it is always advisable to get them checked by a vet to rule out any underlining illness that may produce similar symptoms. But if your senior cat is pronounced fit then just old age will have to account for their lifestyle changes and allowances will have to be made to make it easier for your cat to live a normal comfortable life.

Need-to-know Cat House Training Tips

Need-to-know Cat House Training Tips

Need-to-know Cat House Training Tips

Many of us, getting a cat for the first time, assume that cat house training will somehow happen by itself, with the minimal input or effort from ourselves. Perhaps we credit the cat with more intelligence than it possesses, but many will underestimate how much time and patience is required before the cat learns to follow the basic house rules. In these early days, the new owner should refrain from smacking or slapping or even shaking the cat. You cannot beat a cat or kitten into obedience, so that they become the perfect home cat - you will only provoke hatred and fear, which will further reduce the chances of training her properly. Here's a great and very effective tip - always keep a spray bottle of water at hand, and if she misbehaves badly, just gently spray her. If you gain an understanding of how and why your cat does what she does, what cat instinct she is following, then you are heading for success in your cat house training. If you expect her to do something that goes against her nature, then you better be prepared to make it worth her while. If you want to make the most rapid progress, a modest investment in a decent cat manual or guide will be richly rewarded, and you will at a stroke begin to understand "cat think" and cat care in general, and also avoid the most common mistakes. In practical terms, this most commonly means rewarding correct behavior either with a physical treat - a favorite food, biscuit, for example - or with words of praise and congratulation. She will quickly learn to associate particular actions with positive responses, and, conversely, if these rewards are withheld, she will know that she has transgressed in some way. Cats are known for their short attention span, so your training sessions should be fairly brief, ideally around 10 minutes. And because their attention does tend to wander, make sure your sessions are held somewhere where there are as few distractions as possible. So make it indoors, with no view of the outdoor world, and no visitors, human or animal. The essential training exercises that concern most new cat owners are to do with urination, scratching, jumping and biting. Most cat owners face problems with their cat not using the litter box - obviously, a new kitten has to be taught toilet training cat style, but even mature well-behaved cats can suddenly "forget" to use the litter box, and, when this occurs, the wise owner will know to look for some change in the cat's environment that will have triggered this behavior. The second biggest concern is with cat scratching, a behavior that is an essential part of the animal's nature. The provision of good scratching posts in strategic places will alleviate the problem, and spare your furniture and curtains. The surgical removal of the cat's claws was until recently seen as an easy and permanent solution to the problem, but in a more humane age this is seen as quite a barbaric act to perform on a Cat, and one that upsets the whole balance mechanism of the cat, and is really traumatic. A cat will not expend unnecessary energy, so if she jumps there is a reason for it. Most often, she will jump onto the window sill to view the outside world - if you want her not to jump on a particular sill, block off the view for the first 15 inches, perhaps with a piece of fabric. If there is no view, she will soon go elsewhere. Jumping onto counters or worktops or tables in the kitchen should be completely discouraged from the beginning - it might simply signal that she wants feeding. Biting is unfortunately often encouraged in a kitchen - children in particular enjoy being bitten by young kitten teeth, and will often playfully provoke it until it bites. Cats have pretty sharp teeth, so you have to let your cat know that biting will not be tolerated. If the behavior persists, you might discourage it with a spray from your water bottle.

Cat Training

Cat Training

Cat Training

Many people believe that cat training is too difficult, and often let their cat’s behavior problems continue based solely on this fact. The idea that cats are too hard or too stubborn to train, is just simply not true. They may not be as easy or as willing to comply as dogs might be, but training your cat is not an impossible task, in fact, it isn’t even very difficult if you go about it in the right ways. Now, when referring to cat training, I don’t mean teaching your kitty to do tricks. There is nothing wrong with teaching your cat tricks, but the focus of this article is on training your cat to behave properly in your home. The best cat training technique is to use positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior. You will see much better results using positive techniques, rather than punishing, scolding, or yelling at your cat for bad behaviors. Keeping that in mind, you should NEVER hit or smack your cat. When you have a misbehaving cat, frustration is inevitable, but physically punishing or yelling at your cat will only worsen the situation. Positive reinforcement will give you the best results while training your cat. This just means to reward your cat for a good behavior. Giving them a treat or giving them extra affection after they have done something right will encourage them to continue this good behavior. Another technique is incremental training. In addition to positive reinforcement, this technique can be very successful. A possible situation where these techniques could be utilized together is when attempting to train your cat to use the human toilet or training them to go to the bathroom outdoors. Slowly moving the cat’s litter box to where you eventually want them to use as their bathroom, whether it’s the toilet or outdoors, is an example of incremental training. In addition to using this incremental training technique, positively reinforcing your cat each time they use their litter box after you move it will encourage them to continue to do this until they are using the toilet or the outdoors. Cat training can be a very important aspect of your relationship with your cat and won’t always be easy. When you use positive techniques and reward your cat for good behaviors, rather than punish them for bad ones, you will start to see the results that you want. Show your cat that you appreciate their good behavior and you will find that training them is fairly simple.

The Importance of Playing With Your Cat

The Importance of Playing With Your Cat

The Importance of Playing With Your Cat

Playing is fun, right? So why do we need to know anything else about it, surely that’s is all there is to it. Well it’s true that the main reason we might play with our cat is because it is something fun to do, but for your cat it has a far more important role and is key to their general mental and physical well being. This means that it should be something that all cat owners should spend a little more time thinking about and incorporating into their every day cat care routine, rather than as an occasional playtime. Hunting is a instinct that is in bred into every cat, even for our domesticated feline friends, who do not need to hunt for their food, will still have a strong desire to hunt for prey. But hunting plays another important role for cats other than for finding food; it also helps to build their confidence, their agility and keeps them fit. It also would occupy a cat for most of the day out in the wild and so a cat that no longer has the opportunity to hunt every day will find itself with a lot of unfilled hours. Many cat owners will have experienced a bored or depressed cat that shows their frustration through aggressive behaviour, such as chewing or scratching the furniture or one who hides them selves a way and becomes a very shy and timid cat. A good substitute to hunting is therefore energetic chasing, stalking and pouncing playtimes, where the cat can engage all their natural instincts into the game and feel stimulated by the play. Unfortunately just leaving a motionless cat toy lying around just doesn’t meet those requirements, so it is important for cat owners to interact with their cats during playtimes. Ideally you should play with your cat at least a couple of times a day for about 10 to 15 minutes each time. Of course this may not always be possible but at least one playtime a day is required to keep your cat healthy and happy. Playing with your cat an hour before bedtime is a good habit to get into, especially if you have a very alert nighttime cat that frequently tries to wake you up at night. This will help to use some of that energy and encourage them to sleep afterwards. The length of playtime will very much be dictated by the cat, some may be quite happy to play for 15 minutes while others prefer shorter more frequent games. The secret to playing with your cat is to think like your cat, do they like to stalk and pounce onto small ground creatures like mice or do they prefer to climb trees to hunt flying creatures. Your cats preference will help you to decide which sort of toys would suit them better, such as furry mice and balls for the ground hunter and feathery, colourful toys which can be dangled and simulate flight for your bird hunter. It is also important that we make the game as realistic for your pet, simply rolling a ball along the floor will soon become boring and uninteresting. Instead make sure that the playroom is interesting, placing open paper bags around is a good way to provide plenty of hiding places to pounce from. Also vary how you manipulate the toys, for instance make some movements fast, others slow, hide the toy behind or under something. This will make the game far more realistic and exciting for your cat, who can utilise all their hunting skills like stealth, speed, agility and cunning. Keep the toys you use with the cat hidden away after use so that they do not become to over familiar with them and lose interest. Providing new toys from time to time will help to stimulate your cat’s interest in the games and encourage more energetic play. It is also advisable not to use treats too often during playtime as this may cause weight gain over time. Treats may be helpful at first to encourage a shy or timed cat to come out and play but as their confidence grows, treats should be removed from the games. Playing with your cat as you can see is much more than just a fun thing to do, it will promote confidence, fitness, reduce boredom and aggression and generally help in your cats over all mental and physical health. As an added bonus, regular play between you and your cat will strengthen the bond you have with each other. Your cat will associate you with fun and excitement and will seek your company out more often than with someone who just feeds them. Over all playtime will benefit everyone involved and should be encouraged throughout a cat lifetime.

Trying Different Cat Litter Experiments

Trying Different Cat Litter Experiments

Trying Different Cat Litter Experiments

Cats are unique pets because they do whatever they want and aren’t even excited when people come home. A dog would jump and bark while a cat might look in some ones direction and flick its tale. It’s almost like people are to be servants to the cats – or at least this is probably what the cat thinks anyway. People are very busy in this modern life we live. However, if someone has extra time, they may want to try some cat litter experiments. You can begin this informal experiment by getting different brands and types of cat litter. Cat litter experiments should be written out to not mess up the experiment. Buy different types and brands and get the prices handy as well as the total volume and weight of each box or bag. See how the cat likes the different brands available. Your cat will probably not spend the time to talk to them to you about it. So the person performing the cat litter experiments will have to be where they notice the cat’s attitude. Remember that while you do this, the cat will not be happy. Cats like privacy the same way people do. If your cat seems irritated, then the cat is happy. If a cat is not irritated, then do something like petting or stroking it. That will make the cat irritated and the cat litter experiments can proceed. Once all of the different litters have been tried, then begin to see how fast each type and brand of cat litter lasts. Results of Cat Litter Experiments After all of the cat litter experiments have been conducted, its time to tally all of the results. First and foremost, you may not want to tell anyone that you performed this experiment; people may think you have all the time in the world! But since you have gone to the trouble of doing the experiment it is wise to complete it by getting the results. Usually, cat litter experiments will show which cat litter is the best all around for both the cat and the owner and which is the best value for money. All of that information will lead to the top cat litters for you and they can then be narrowed down to a list of a few top brands. One great byproduct of doing the cat litter experiments is that the cat will probably stay irritated at the owner for years to come. Remember this; an irritated cat is a happy cat.

Cat Tracking Collars Can be Hard to Locate

Cat Tracking Collars Can be Hard to Locate

Cat Tracking Collars Can be Hard to Locate

Cat tracking collars seem like a smart choice for keeping tabs on a wandering feline. Add to a tracking collar a global positioning device that knows its current location at all times. The GPS device can then periodically send its longitude and latitude position to some base station by simply transmitting it over the cellular phone network. Once received, the location information is uploaded to a website which allows you to monitor your cat's location. Not only is this GPS tracking system a good idea, it's already being used in a variety of ways -- from car navigation systems to locating lost hikers. However, the typical GPS cat tracking system is difficult to locate -- at least in the United States. The main problem is that GPS technology has not been miniaturized to the point of making GPS cat collars small enough and light enough for most household cats. Domestic cats are simply unable to bear the weight of the current GPS electronics and power supply. The only websites that advertise GPS cat tracking collars seem to be located in Europe, and those particular European devices are fairly large -- weighing over 90g. Most average sized cats would only be able to carry an 80g tracking collar comfortably. The other downside to GPS tracking collars, and this goes for both cat tracking collars and dog tracking collars, is that GPS collars typically have monthly fees associated with them. This is because the GPS collars will normally utilize the cellular phone networks for transmitting location information and the cellular networks all have monthly charges. So if you wish to avoid monthly fees you will have to use another type of technology for the cat tracking collar. One of the best options that I have found is to use a short range radio tracking collar. This kind of tracking collar transmits a periodic beacon signal that is detected by a directional receiver. With the receiver you are able to tell in which direction your cat is located by how strong a signal you are detecting. In addition, as you get closer to the radio collar the beacon signal also gets stronger so you can determine both the relative direction and distance to your cat. These short range radio cat tracking collars have two distinct advantages over the cat GPS collars. First, because they use free radio frequencies you avoid the monthly cellular network fees used by the GPS systems. Second, the electronics used with these short range devices can be made small and light enough for any domestic cat to wear. The tracking system on the collar only has to beacon a weak signal so the amount of electronics and power requirements are low. These types or cat tracking collars just need a small coin battery for power. There is one disadvantage to using a radio tracking collar. Unlike the cat GPS locators you would not be able to pinpoint the longitude and latitude of your cat since the radio collar does not transmit any exact location coordinates -- just distance and directional information that you can detect via the relative signal strength with the directional receiver. However, since cats usually do not wander miles away in a short time span -- my cats are usually within a block of my house -- having exact location information to track on a website does not seem as critical in my view. The other perceived disadvantage of a short range radio cat locator collar is that it will not work over long distances as compared to the GPS collar. That is only partially true. While a GPS collar that is using the cellular network may be able to transmit location information over a longer distance, cellular network systems are also susceptible to interference and signal loss. If your cat should wander into a hole or a cave or some area that is not being serviced by a cellular tower, then the GPS collar would not work. A short range radio collar would be able to work in much more remote areas and in places where the cellular phone networks cannot reach since the radio collar only needs to transmit as far as the receiver while the GPS cat collar needs to transmit to the nearest cellular tower. So consider a radio cat collar as a cat tracking device if you cannot find a cat GPS collar that fits your needs and budget.

Cat tracking collars can literally be a life-saver for your cat. Learn more about cat gps and related devices at http://www.mycattrackingcollars.com.

Is Your Cat Fat?

Is Your Cat Fat?

Is Your Cat Fat?

Fatter cats may be cuddlier, but they don't live as long as average weight cats. Sad but true. Fat cats are twice as likely to die in middle age. They are also 4.5 times more likely to develop diabetes, seven times more likely to become lame from arthritis and three times more likely to have skin problems.

About 20-30 percent of domestic cats are obese, particularly older females.

It is important to recognize if your cat has a weight problem. To do this you need to be prepared to admit that you have played a role in this, however unwittingly. Nobody sets out to make their cat overweight...it can just sneak up on you.

How to tell if your cat is overweight
Cats at a healthy weight have a waist. If you have difficulty feeling your cat's ribs when applying a small amount of pressure, you have a problem. When you look down at your cat, if you see a bulge around his stomach, he is overweight. An average weight cat's sides will look pretty straight.

If you prefer to have numbers, you can weigh your cat and compare that to published weights on specific breeds. Your vet can tell you how much your non-pedigree should weigh.

To weigh your cat, you need to weigh yourself alone, then weigh yourself holding the cat. The difference is your cat's weight.

Why your cat is overweight
Unfortunately the most likely reason is that it eats more than it needs. As they get older, cats become less active and don't need as many calories. Overeating can be attributed to boredom, excess leftovers and treats and possibly the introduction of another pet. Your overweight cat may eat your other cat's food if they are fed together.

Food changes
If you are still feeding your cat the same amount as when he was young and spritely, try reducing the amount in each meal a little, and feeding smaller amounts more frequently if you can. If your cat is seriously overweight, you can talk to your vet about lower calorie foods. You'll need to cut down any snacks or leftovers you're giving as well. Play with your cat instead of giving treats. You may need to feed multiple cats separately to ensure that they only get the portion you've given them.

Cat playout
Indoor cats may not get enough exercise. Play with your cat more. You can use home made toys to encourage active play, as simple as a feather or ball of yarn. Another great way to activate your cat is to shine a torch on a wall and let your cat chase it. Punch some holes in a box and let your cat play inside it, or in a paper bag.

Once you see the problem, you can do something about it. You have a lot of control over your cat's food and environment, and your efforts will be rewarded with a healthier cat who will be with you for many years to come.

The Advantages of Cat Food Prepared at Home

The Advantages of Cat Food Prepared at Home

The Advantages of Cat Food Prepared at Home

Every cat owner knows that it is their responsibility to give their cat the right nutrition for them to grow fit and healthy. A well balanced cat diet contains all the necessary nutrients such as carbohydrates, fat, and protein. You can check out the pet food section of your local grocery for the different types of cat food commercially available to the public. Cat food comes in different forms: in cans, dried or dehydrated, and semi-moist. Another option to consider is making your own cat food. How hard can it be? The preparation of cat food at home may consume a lot of time and be quite difficult to have all the ingredients needed to have a complete meal and complete set of nutrients. There are several cat food recipes available in the Internet which you can easily download. If you are quite adept in cooking, you may try your hand in making it. Some cat owners prefer making their own cat food to be able to ensure its safety and nutritional value, especially in the light of information that several brands of cat food are being recalled due to the presence of harmful chemicals and harmful bacteria. These substances may make your cats sick and may even lead to its death. Another advantage of preparing your own cat food is that it costs less expensive that the commercially available ones. Just make sure that you do not sacrifice the nutritional content of the cat food you prepare just for the sake of saving money. Additional research may be needed to find the exact amount of nutrient needed by your cat according to age and size. Also take note that the dietary requirements of a kitten differs greatly from what a full-grown cat needs. Be knowledgeable enough on what ingredients can cause adverse effects on the health of your cat. Some ingredients that are harmless to humans may be harmful to your cats such as certain root crops like onion and garlic. They contain substances that may harm the cells of the blood of cats. So always be sure that the ingredients of your homemade cat food will not harm your cat. If your cat was initially introduced to commercially prepared cat food, there might be some resistance when you try to shift to homemade cat food especially if they are quite picky eaters. A lot of patience and time may be needed to get them to try out the food you prepared and have them constantly eat it. Do not get disheartened if your cat doesn’t want to eat the food you prepared for him. It is not your cooking. It is more of them being wary of new things, especially new food. Try to observe the response of your cat to the food, if it is with enthusiasm or with indifference. An effective trick may be to mix the new food with their old food to introduce the new taste to your cat. Once they get to know the taste, they will in time eat the food you prepared for them. A drawback with home prepared cat food is the complicatedness of its preparation as well as the time needed to prepare it. To reduce these hassles, you can make a month’s supply of cat food and get portions from it for your cat’s daily intake. Data is also found on which supplements may be mixed with your recipe to make sure that the meal you prepare contains the right proportion of nutrients. It may be easier to just get a commercially prepared cat food but its reliability may be in question since some may have components that may cause an allergic reaction to occur on your cat. Preparing your own cat food will not only save you money but will ensure the safety of your cat. You can ask your veterinarian or go online for recipes and other information on a well balanced meal for you cat.

Raising Siamese Cats

Raising Siamese Cats

Raising Siamese Cats

Of all breeds of cats, the Siamese cat is the ideal cat for the owner who wants a demonstrative and loving cat. Known to be extroverts, Siamese cats are outgoing and sociable. They know who their owners are and are frequently seen shadowing their owner wherever they go. Siamese cats depend on human beings for their survival since they do not possess several traits typically seen in cats. The color of their hair may be good to look at but not good as camouflage. They cannot roam around during the night because they cannot see clearly in low lighted areas. And their hearing sense is less sensitive than those of other breeds of cats. Siamese cats thrive on company. They love to be around people, which is the reason why it is not advisable to have a Siamese cat if you live alone and are often out. If you do plan to have a Siamese cat as a pet, then make sure there is someone to be with the cat. Or better yet, get another Siamese cat to pair up with your pet cat. If there is no other Siamese cat available, you can get another feline since it there are other breeds that can be matched with your Siamese cat. You can pair your Siamese cat with another cat breed as long as they will get along. You may need to consult your veterinarian or a cat expert on which breed can be put together with a Siamese. Make sure to provide them with toys or any activity that can occupy their time. It can be a toy mouse, a ball of string, or even a post for scratching. This will provide some entertainment for your Siamese cats as well as prevent them from using and destroying your own furniture for their play. A woman would probably envy the metabolism of a Siamese cat since they eat big sized portions of food and yet do not grow fat. It is probably because these cats eat just the right amount of food that will make them full. Anything beyond it, they leave on their plates. So if you notice that there is always a bit of food left on their plates, it may mean that you are giving too much food and must be lessened on the subsequent meals. On the other hand, if they seem to be searching for more to eat, they may still be hungry. Try adding another portion of food whenever you give your Siamese cat a meal until you notice that they are quite satiated. And when they are, take note of the portion you need to feed your cat for their every meal. A Siamese cat matures faster and earlier than the others in the cat family, some even as young as five months. Since spaying of your cat is recommended on the sixth month, you have at least a month to ensure that your cat does not get into trouble and get itself pregnant since it is at this time of the month that they are actively looking for a mate. You have to keep her indoors and check on where she is and what she is doing. If she manages to get out and find a male cat, chances are that you are going to be a grandparent to their kittens. Siamese cats often are healthy in general, with a life span reaching up to twenty years. However, they are also prone to having tartar problems on their teeth and even gingivitis. If these conditions are not given attention, it may affect the health of your pet Siamese. They should have regular checkups with their veterinarian to be able to get their teeth clean. You can also do the brushing if your cat allows you to do it. A Siamese cat is the perfect companion cat for those people who know how to handle its character, since their personalities are the ideal complement to the Siamese cat.

Cat Behavior Described With Cat Information And Kitten Information

Cat Behavior Described With Cat Information And Kitten Information

Cat Behavior Described With Cat Information And Kitten Information

It is always a concern, when a person witnesses a violent behavior between two cats, who were once good friends. Aggression among cats however is associated with certain reasons and it is necessary for human beings to understand this violent behavior of cats and act appropriately. Different Forms Of Aggression: Below are some common and different types of aggression in cats: Play aggression: It is also termed play- fighting. It begins very early with kittens, but adults can also show this kind of aggression. Mother cats teach predator-prey behavior very early to their kittens, and thus cats possess a natural survival instinct be it in a comfortable home or in the wild. The kitten will follow the other and then leap on that kitten. Play fighting is normally harmless fun, unless it becomes a sexual aggression. One needs to prevent injury by cutting the cat's claw without fail. Play fighting is the initial step for establishing an everlasting hierarchy amongst feline house members. Sexual aggression: One can easily identify sexual aggression. The aggressor cat will nibble the scruff of the victim and will try mounting it. It will also display thrusting hip movements observed in female-male mating. Territorial aggression: Territorial aggression arises between equally matched cats and can occur between any genders. An individual may identify this aggression, since a cat exhibits this type of aggression by spraying urine or marking. The aggressor cat will raise its back, lay back its ears, hiss, growl and then will jump on its victim. The victim accepts defeat by whirling and gradually walking away or the victim begins a violent battle. An individual needs to try to part two fighting cats, or else they will inflict severe damage. Most house cats will finally resolve their fights. Nevertheless, it requires a lot of commitment, time, and training to nurture a peaceful domestic or house cat. Redirected aggression: This aggression is generally a momentary condition and one needs to control it as soon as possible. An individual may control redirected cat aggression by following two steps: 1. The strange cat must be kept out of the yard 2. Separate two household cats for a while until they forget the episode. Ways To Deal With Inter-Cat Aggression: Below are some ways to manage inter-cat aggression: Distraction: An individual may effectively control over-enthusiastic sexual aggression, play fighting and territorial aggression by providing some distraction to the cat. 1. One can loudly clap hands to distract the cats
2. One can hiss loudly.
3. Give the cat a huge stuffed toy Physical intervention: Scuffing is one type of physical intervention. One must perform scruffing by holding the aggressive cat at its scruff and firmly but softly pushing it down. Use scruffing for disciplining the cats. This is accompanied by loud hissing just as the mother cat would do. The aggressive cat immediately relaxes into a submissive posture. Once the aggressive cat calms down leave him and talk softly to him. A few tender strokes will also be apt.

Domestic Cats That Were Once Feral Cats

Domestic Cats That Were Once Feral Cats

Domestic Cats That Were Once Feral Cats

Some ecologists say that the domestication of feral cat harms environment or ecosystem, as excessive population of feral cats result in large hunting of small birds and animals in both rural and urban areas. Feral cats have a considerable effect on the environment, as these cats have put several native animals and species to danger and even death. Even, people now consider feral cats as the most vicious creatures on small islands. Other species that are vanished on small islands include burrowing bettong and spectacled hare-wallaby. These animals were found once abundant on small islands. Environmental Issues: Researchers state that feral cats in the USA, every year, kill large population of animal and bird species, and hundreds of those in Florida. Thus, these cat breeds have great impact on environment as well as wildlife animal species. This may result in disruption of food chain and limitation of local wildlife populations. In fact, feral cats in countries such as New Zealand and Australia have killed native birds and animals and have damaged the natural flora completely. In Australia, feral cats have killed several wallabies, thus there is a considerable drop in the population of wallabies over the years. Many ecologists found that feral cats were to blame mostly for the dropping population of rock wallabies in a remote area of tropical Queensland. Even though feral cats mainly depend on rabbits for their food source, they do little to lower the population, as the population of rabbits is as same as the amount of feral cats in Australia. Not only the feral cats have a substantial effect on food chain, but they also affect the other local creatures by depleting their sources of food. These include the wedge-tailed eagle, hawks, the eastern quoll, reptiles such as the Lace Monitor and Goanna and the dingoes. Feral cats eat nearly all those foods that are vital for other local species. Because of such huge population, not only these cats eat all other native species, but also provide nothing for other local species. In most regions, hawks and eagles have had to alter their routine diet to survive due to these cats. Even, the native cats are in danger. Feral cats more often affect domestic cats such as Quoll. For instance, if feral cats come near female quolls, they become infertile. Here, people cannot help them out, but as there are several feral cats around, the best way to avoid is preventing domestic cats to outside exposure. A recent report study states that several female quolls have already become infertile and their populations are declining day-by-day. Overview: Feral cats also carry certain incurable diseases, which are fatal and harmful to other species, especially for the local marsupials. Toxoplasmosis is the name of one such disease, which causes paralysis, blindness, respiratory disorders, and loss of infantile because of stillbirth and impulsive abortion. Feral cats are also the carriers of Rabies, a disease affecting not only animals and species, but also the human beings. It is more excruciating and devastating to the whole ecosystem.

Cat Training And Cat Behavior - Will Cat Problems Be Solved

Cat Training And Cat Behavior - Will Cat Problems Be Solved

Cat Training And Cat Behavior - Will Cat Problems Be Solved

The cat's probable social behavior varies extremely from ferociously self-determining to compatibly outgoing with other felines. According to a few professionals a cat's social qualities are "in evolution" from self-dependent to mutually dependent. In reality, a cat's behavior and resultant societal relations with other cats are dependent on factors such as population density of neighborhood cats, premature knowledge and the amount of food available in the vicinity. Variation In The Population Density And Grouping Dynamics: The family cat is a solitary seeker. It requires a large area to catch adequate prey, while scrounging for itself and it will protect that area from other cats too. From a study, it is revealed that a vicinity of sq mile (1 sq km) will sustain nearly five cats in the agricultural areas of Europe, North America and Australasia. Altering circumstances such as new felines, absence of few cats or new people greatly affects the social dynamics of cats. Social acquaintances generally develop between females and kittens, and rarely by adult males in a characteristic assembly of tamed cats, who stay with humans. Cats settle differences normally by visual contact or occasionally by a swipe of its paw once, there is friendliness amongst cats residing in the same place. When two cats meet up suddenly, the cat that has a higher status is generally the superior at that time. However, it might not be the same during the next meeting. Odor and well-being also affects the status of a cat. When a cat comes home after undergoing treatment at a hospital for some medical issue, sometimes a healthy household cat attacks it. Once a status is formed in a multi cat home, however differences are rare. Behavioral Changes Caused By Food: When food is available in plenty, social relations increase because the reasons for fighting decrease. Sparsely distributed hunting cats exhibit defensive gestures rather than social while well-fed cats in neighborhood areas usually exhibit outgoing social interactions. Household cats are the friendliest, since food is aplenty at home. The Importance Of Family And Matriarchy: One should not expect a household cat to be pleased with the arrival of a new feline just because it gets plentiful food and it has a very easy life. It is nearly impossible. Cats can get along with one another only, if they share a blood relationship. The other important thing is early castration. Although untamed male cats make very less social relations than females, neutered male cats make the same number of social contacts as neutered female cats. Neutering improves male feline relationships considerably. The cat family is mostly matriarchal. Untamed cat population generally contains four or more blood-related feline generations. The most frequent social communication amongst females is licking rather than rubbing. The mother, grandmother, sisters and other female members remove the male kittens from the colony as soon as they mature and exhibit rough play behavior. These males accompany other males, who generally hover around and prevent any unrelated male from coming near.

Cat Scratching Prevention And Learn About Declawing Cats

Cat Scratching Prevention And Learn About Declawing Cats

Cat Scratching Prevention And Learn About Declawing Cats

It is necessary for a person to think very carefully before putting a house cat indoors. This is because cats habitually scratch household furniture. Scratching is a standard feline behavior. Cats living outside do not face this problem, since they hone their claws on trees and so on. The most important reason for cat scratching is that by doing so they mark their territory. They exercise themselves and remove dead nails by doing so. Scratching also makes them feel good. Methods To Prevent Cat Scratching: It is unreasonable and wrong to expect cats to end scratching. To prevent scratching, one needs to build or design a scratching post, provide suitable play toys and so on. It will be beneficial to build scratching posts in areas where the cat spends most of its time, with one near the cat's resting area. The height of the post needs to be such that the cat is able to scratch it, while on its hind legs with extended forelegs. The post also has to be very sturdy to prevent it from toppling. A scratching post having a corner is preferable so that the cats can scratch on both the sides. Some cats also like a horizontal scratching post. Give special thought to the surface quality of the scratching post. Firmly woven fabrics often covers commercial scratching posts for permanence, but a cat generally like a slackly woven fabric, since its claws clasp and rip while scratching. A carpet covering is acceptable. It is necessary to ensure that no taut loops are present in it. Many cats favor sisal, a part of an old chair and even bare lumber for scratching. It is advisory to use a material that a cat prefers. If this consumes a lot of time, then soft claws are another beneficial alternative. Individuals can apply these light vinyl caps over a cat's claw. These caps have curved ends and thus the scratching of a cat does not destroy one's home and fittings. It is possible to prevent a cat's destructive scratching by cautiously trimming the sharp tips of the cat's claw. Two people can easily accomplish this task. One person holds the cat, while the other cuts its nails. Declawing: Another solution to prevent cat scratching is declawing. This is however a very severe action and will harm the cat. People need to think of onychectomy, when the cat suffers a persistent infection, disturbing wounds or neoplastic disease. Terms such as mayhem, mutilation, dismemberment and disjointing aptly define declawing. Unlike to what people think, the declawing surgery includes severing of the claws, the entire phalanges, joints, ligaments, bones, nerves and tendons. Ten separate hurtful amputations involving the third phalanx and the last joint of every toe is done in the declawing surgery. Unlike the human fingernail, the cat's claw is a segment of the final bone in the toe. Apart from declawing, other training methods are also present, which cat owners may try to employ their cats to avoid scratching indoors. Training is possible for all cats with some time, love and consideration.

Cat Food Information, Cat Care And Cat Health In All About Cat Article

Cat Food Information, Cat Care And Cat Health In All About Cat Article

Cat Food Information, Cat Care And Cat Health In All About Cat Article

Cats need a high-protein diet, rich in fats. They normally eat small meals all through the day. Cats maintain their body weight by sticking to the diet they take in. To keep cats healthy, owners have to ensure that the foods they give to their cats are rich in minerals, protein and vitamins. In addition, the diet needs to be limited. Increasing the food intake for cats may invite serious health problems. Necessary Nutrients: Cat owners need to check, if their pet food offers the following nutrients: 1. Pet food has to contain vital nutrients such as minerals and vitamins. One vital nutrient is Vitamin A and vitamin E, which helps to build resistance against a variety of diseases. 2. Animal protein from poultry, meat, egg sources and fish helps to keep bones sturdy and strong. 3. The diet needs to have accurate balance of fatty acids that nurture the skin and coat health. 4. Taurine, an amino acid, extracted from meat sources such as fish and chicken. This helps in keeping the eyes healthy and preventing heart diseases. Taurine supports fetal growth, development and reproduction in cats. 5. Next, a fiber source such as beet pulp, which maintains the digestive system of cats, is also a necessary nutrient. Special Dietary Needs for Pregnant or lactating cats: Pet owners have to take enough care of their pregnant cats. Increase their intake by 50 per cent than their current diets. The owner may give kitten food as a nutritional support to cats at the time of conception. After the mother cat gives birth to young kittens, gradually increase the intake to 75 per cent. Maintain this diet until the kittens get used to eating canned or dry food. The moment kittens begin eating substitute food, incorporate the normal food again so that the mother cat keeps away from any weight gain. Avoid Obesity: Generally, indoor cats do not get the opportunity to exercise as compared to outdoor cats. Due to this, indoor cats fall prey to obesity. To avoid this, pet owners have to allow their cats to exercise in open the way they wish. Preventing Cats from Developing Hairballs: Cats take their own time to arrange themselves neatly. They constantly lick their fur and in the process, sometimes swallow hair. If the hairball fails to pass into the intestines, the cat may land in trouble. It may try to eject the hairball. To avoid this, pet owners have to make sure that they supply a nutritional diet to their cats. What Every Cat Needs: No matter what food they get to eat, owners need to make available plenty of water for their cats, always. It is advisable to place water at a distance three to five feet from the food. This prevents the cat from swallowing water hastily. Cats demand comfortable place to eat and prefer to stay away from people around them. Last of all, the cat owners need to take their cats to the veterinarian at regular intervals. This will help in keeping pet cats healthy and happy.

Cat Health And Cat Metabolism Information For The Best Cat Care

Cat Health And Cat Metabolism Information For The Best Cat Care

Cat Health And Cat Metabolism Information For The Best Cat Care

Cat lovers who own cats in their houses usually look after their grooming, feeding, or the training part. However, understanding the metabolism of the cats is equally imperative, because it enables pet owners to know the temperament, nature and the habits of their cats. Metabolism means ongoing of the physical as well as chemical changes, which take place in the cat's body. The metabolism of a healthy cat can be found by checking the glucose level in its blood. It has to be between 80 to 120 mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter). Hence, cats need to take rest and tend to sleep a lot. Their sleeping durations are usually of 12 to 16 hours. They do not sleep continuously for these many hours, instead they take short naps which together sum to 12 hours. It helps them to conserve energy. Some cats sleep for much longer duration for about 20 hours in 24 hours. Perhaps, this might be the reason why people refer to individuals who sleep more often as "having a cat nap". Factors Of Metabolism: Body temperature is the main factor of the cat's metabolism. The layer of fat beneath the skin protects it from harsh winters. A body temperature of a typically healthy cat is within 38 to 39 degree Celsius. A cat is assumed feverish if its body temperature is equal to 39.5 degree Celsius or greater than that. Moreover, if the body temperature of the cat is lower than 37.5 degree Celsius, that cat is hypothermic. Heart beat of the cat ranges from 140 -220 beats/minute. If the cat is on the hunting spree, its heart rate becomes higher. Whereas, the heart beat of the cat in resting position is within 150-180 beats/minute. Due to their frequent nocturnal nature, they often enter a stage of greater hyperactivity and liveliness. It happens mostly in the evening times and, hence pet lovers refer to this phase as happy hour or mad hour or evening craziness. The temperament of the cats varies and depends on their breeds. Short and haired cats are usually skinnier and, hence more energetic, whereas longhaired cats and taller cats are heavier and inactive. Overview: Cats are carnivorous, so they have this unique capacity to metabolize protein in meat to sugar and carbohydrate. Most people feed cats with dry feline diet, which is widely available in the market. Nevertheless, cat's metabolism is such that, it converts the dry diet into carbohydrate, which is not good for their health. Give them high protein diet such as meat-based food to make them active and healthy. One of the common problems faced by many cat owners is, their cats eat a lot sometimes and at times, they do not eat at all. In such case, people need to know that, it is just natural because cat's metabolism is equipped to "treat and crisis" cycle. Therefore, if felines go without food for many days, people need not have to worry. Simply wait and the cats will start eating, when hungry. Hence, this is all about cat metabolism.

Cat History And Cat Classification Of Domestic Cats

Cat History And Cat Classification Of Domestic Cats

Cat History And Cat Classification Of Domestic Cats

Scientists classify living organisms into different kingdoms, family, and orders to study more about them. Although, most people do not get into such details, but certain individuals who love cats, will definitely want to know the scientific classification of cats. However, before that here is little history about classifications. In nineteenth century, there was this huge craze to classify the organisms scientifically. During that era, researchers identified numerous species and subspecies. They named the organisms by their own name or by the name of traveler, who bought them from different regions. Accordingly, cats were no exception and researchers classified them too. Below is a detailed description of the scientific classification of the cats. To start with, the domestic cat in the household is commonly referred as Felis Catus. How Researchers Classified Cats: Life science expert Carouse Linnaes gave the name Felis Catus to the domestic cat in the year 1758. The domestic cats are in fact distant relatives of the wild cats. Therefore, domestic cats are the subspecies of feral cats. Thus, according to the guidelines of the ICZN (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature), wild cats are referred as F silvestris and F silvestris catus for the domestic species. Cats are mammals and represent the vertebrate groups. Furthermore, since cats are meat eaters they are placed under carnivores order. The easy and scientific tabulation of the cat classification is as follows: Common name: cat, feline, kitty cat, domestic cat, and pussycat
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia Order: Carnivora
Suborder: Feliformia Family: Felidae
Subfamily: Felinate/Pantherinae Species: Felis catus Cats such as domestic cats, Pumas, cheetahs, lynx, ocelot, and others come into Subfamily Felinae whereas large cats such as leopards, jaguars, lions, and tigers come in subfamily Pantherinae. Long before the scientists assigned scientific classification for cats, ancient travelers and cat lovers had already classified them into subspecies. It usually depended on the notion that the particular cat type was representative of the main phenotype of cat in the area. This method was same as that of Victorian love of gathering and classifying the organisms and then claiming them in certain order. For instance, the present day Felis Catus anura is referred as the Manx, catus Siamensis as Siamese, F catus cartusenesis as the Chartreux, and F catus angorensis as Turkish Angora. About Species: Species are nothing but taxonomic assembling of animals, which are similar but are readily distinguishable from one another. Although, they appear similar they never crossbreed naturally. For instance, tigers and cats are of same species but they are very different in terms of behavior as well as in type, so there is a need to classify them more into subspecies or races. Mammals of a particular subspecies vary morphologically from distinctive mammals. The domestic cat is actually the offspring of the original African Wildcat. The subspecies of an African wildcat is F s lybica. The domestic cats take the place below F s lybica and become felis catus. All breeds of felis catus interbreed naturally.
